Since losing a 3-0 heartbreaker to Salem, the Tallwood football team has been on a mission for respect. A 43-8 victory over Ocean Lakes Friday night, the Lions' third straight win by a rout, certainly inspired a healthy share of that feeling.
Since the loss to the Sun Devils, No. 7 Tallwood has outscored opponents, 129-14. The Lions' defense has allowed fewer points than any other South Hampton Roads team and wasn't about to let Ocean Lakes bump that standing.
``We're playing very well right now,'' coach Ken Barto said. ``That loss was definitely a wakeup call. We've got just as good a talent as anybody would ever want and we're playing like it now.
``We don't plan on sputtering like we did last year.''
After Ocean Lakes (3-4, 3-3 Beach) grabbed a 6-0 lead on Jerome Lauzon's 92-yard return of the opening kickoff, Tallwood methodically tore apart the Dolphins' defense, scoring on three of four first-half possessions.
On its first drive, Tallwood (4-1, 5-1) went 71 yards in eight plays, the score coming on Gilbert Harris' 21-yard toss to Waymond Favors.
Then, taking a punt, the Lions drove 66 yards in eight plays that ended with Harris hitting Travis Mazyck with another 21-yarder.
After another punt, the Lions took a 21-6 lead, traveling 58 yards in six plays with TaRon Anderson going in from the 4.
The second half was much the same, with Anderson adding a 2-yard score - while Derrick Daniels scored on runs of 40 and 26 yards. ILLUSTRATION: TAMARA VONINSKI
