TOURISTS DO NOT MAKE A CITY

Regarding Dan Ballard's ``With Nauticus, city lures tourists' dollars'' (Another View, Oct. 2): The city government, in its quest for more revenue, put our tax money into grandiose schemes such as Nauticus to attract tourists and ignore the taxpayers.

It was apropos that the article on Norfolk being in the top 10 in the nation in population loss and the article on Nauticus attracting tourists downtown were in the same issue. Perhaps if some of the funds that will be used to support Nauticus were used for police, schools and lower taxes, it would help stem the outflow of citizens from Norfolk.

I have lived in Norfolk 40 years hoping things would change, but they haven't. So you can add me to the list of those looking for somewhere else to live.

If someone who cares enough about our city would canvass the area bounded by Little Creek Road, Bay View Boulevard, Granby Street and Cape View Avenue, where there are a great number of houses for sale, and ask the occupants why they are moving, they just might learn something.

As for Norfolk not having a beach, if Mr. Ballard will drive north far enough on Granby Street, I guarantee he will get wet. It's known as the Chesapeake Bay.
