Stephen Joseph Matika Sr., 76, of the 100 block of W. Bayview Blvd., died Oct. 13, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years where he was a Chief Petty Officer. He also worked at Norfolk Collegiate and Old Dominion Stevedoring. He was a native of Perth Amboy, N.J., and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus: Fleet Reserve Branch (NU)60.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Filarowitz Matika; two sons, Stephen J. Matika Jr. and Richard K. Matika, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Elizabeth Zapoticzny and Helen Saft, both of New Jersey; two brothers, Ernest Matika of New Jersey and John Matika of Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren, Stephen J. Matika III, Christopher J. Matika, Jennifer L. Matika and Alexander L. Matika, all of Virginia Beach.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today by Father Lou Ruoff in Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. today. The family will meet at the church at 10 a.m. Monday for prayers and procession to the cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
