A man died early Saturday when the car he was driving the wrong way on Interstate 64 was hit head-on by a tractor-trailer, state police said.
State police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said she could only identify the driver of the car as a Navy man stationed in Norfolk because the man's family hadn't been notified.
The crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-64 near the Indian River Road exit. The driver of the tractor trailer, identified as David Miller, 52, of Maryland, was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital with minor injuries.
Van Dame said state police don't know how the driver of the 1987 Honda got onto the interstate the wrong way, or how long he had been driving in the wrong lanes. Police are asking anyone who saw the wrong-way driver or witnessed the accident to call 424-6800.
The collision closed the interstate more than two hours.
