Norfolk Academy clinched at least a tie for the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools championship Saturday night.
Running back Drew McKnight rushed for 100 of his 129 yards in the first period, including a 74-yard touchdown run on Academy's second offensive play from scrimmage, as the Bulldogs pounded Nansemond-Suffolk 41-0 at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Norfolk Academy (5-0, 3-0 Tidewater) can win the title outright in its last league game Nov. 11 against Catholic. The winner of the Nansemond-Suffolk-Greenbrier Christian game, both once-beaten in league play, could share the crown with Academy if they falter against Catholic. The Bulldogs have defeated both teams and the other two teams, Catholic and Hampton Roads Academy, in the five-team league have at least two losses.
``We haven't really been tested in the TCIS in the last couple of years,'' Academy coach Tom York said. ``Our goal is to win the Prep League.''
Academy rushed for 224 yards in the first half. It used 10 different runners in amassing 377 yards rushing and six players scored.
Catholic 20 Hampton Roads Academy 13 NEWPORT NEWS - Eric Washburn caught a touchdown pass with 22 seconds left in the first half and scored a safety as the Crusaders snapped a four-game losing streak and left the Navigators alone in last place in the TCIS.
A 40-yard pass from Byron Whitehead to Marty White set up Washburn's late-first-half touchdown, which rallied the Crusaders (2-4, 1-2) from a 7-6 deficit. The third-quarter safety made it 14-6, and Catholic took the ensuing free kick, launched a 40-yard drive and scored again on a Whitehead 1-yard run.
The Navigators (2-5, 0-3) scored with 55 seconds left in the game to pull to within seven, but Catholic's Justin Dalton recovered an onside kick to preserve the victory.

Nansemond River 22 Poquoson 3 POQUOSON - Clarence Skinner ran for 137 yards and a touchdown and Ray Wiggins added 121 rushing yards and a score as the Warriors shook off a 3-2 halftime deficit.
Skinner's 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter put the Warriors ahead for good, while Wiggins' 7-yard touchdown run closed the scoring. The Warriors (3-3, 2-1) also scored on Vernon Woodson's 57-yard run and when defensive tackle Antonio Jackson blocked a punt through the end zone. by CNB
