Bruce Cannon Johnson, 60, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 1995, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
He was a native of Conway and the son of Mary Sue Cannon Johnson and the late Russell Haygood Johnson Sr. Mr. Johnson, a respected area attorney, received his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1960 he was admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court of Military Appeals and to the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1963. During his three years in the U.S. Army, he served as Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corp at the Pentagon. In 1963 he received the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorius Service in the performance of his legal work.
He was a member of the Northampton County Bar Association; North Carolina Bar Association; American Bar Association; the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers; the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; and North Carolina State Bar. He has served as president of the Sixth District Bar and the Northampton Bar Association. Mr. Johnson was a 30 year member of the Conway Ruritan Club and served as president for three terms as well as an officer on the district level. He was a master mason in the Pendleton Masonic Lodge (NU)524 in Pendleton, N.C. Also Mr. Johnson was a member of the Conway United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for 30 years and served as Chairman of the Administrative Board; Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Finance Chairman; and Superintendent of the Sunday school. He was currently serving as Chairman of the local board of directors of First Citizens Bank, and had recently retired after 35 years in the practice of law.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalyn Railey Johnson of the home; his daughters, Lynne Cannon Johnson of Chapel Hill, Amy Johnson White and husband, Todd of Hickory, N.C., and Jenny Johnson Agnew and husband, Todd of Memphis, Tenn., and Polly Johnson Lauffenburger and husband, Michael of Lexington, Ky.; and his mother, Mary Sue Cannon Johnson of Conway, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday in the Conway United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Hammond. Burial will follow in the Conway Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the home at 602 Terrace Lane, Conway, N.C. Memorial contributions may be made to the Conway United Methodist Church. Bridgers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
