Ernest Lawrence Matthews, 85, of the 2200 block of Courtney Ave., died Oct. 16, 1995, of cancer.
He was retired from the Naval Supply Center, where he worked for 29 years. He was retired from there 25 years. He was a native of New Bern, N.C., and was the widower of Alma Beatrice. He was a member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk, where he was involved in the Men's Usher Board; the Hodges Bible Class, and Men's Choir at Shiloh Baptist Church. He was a later member of Bank Street Church as a result of relocation to Braywood Manor, where he was a resident of ten years. He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center after 29 years as stevedore. He was also retired from the Norfolk City School Board after 20 years as a custodian.
He is survived by five daughters, Daisy Mae, Ethel Louise, Evelyn Theresa, Ernestine Patricia, and Eunice Lois; seven sons, Ernest L. Matthews Jr., Robert Albert, Charles Augustus, Edward Leon, Joseph Moses, James Oliver, and Jackie Bernard; sister, Louise Matthews; brother, Herman Matthews; and 34 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Moses Matthews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 19, 1995, in Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Matthews' remains were donated. In lieu of flowers, donations to American Cancer Society/Lee's Friends, would be appreciated.
