Pier fishing along the Outer Banks was spotty during the weekend, with good catches reported at some locations and slow fishing at others.
Kitty Hawk Pier fishermen landed a few spot, bluefish and nice speckled trout Saturday, but strong overnight southwest winds resulted in dirty water Sunday, causing slow fishing.
A few small croaker, spot, sea mullet, tailor blues and several keeper puppy drum were landed on Avalon Pier over the weekend.
Some nice spot, scattered tailor bluefish, gray and speckled trout, and baby black drum were caught by fishermen on Nags Head Pier Saturday. Sunday's action was slow.
Anglers on Jennette's Pier landed some nice sea mullet from the end of the pier on shrimp and bloodworms late Saturday afternoon. Scattered sea mullet, spot and a few bluefish were decked Sunday.
A good run of sea mullet, along with small black drum, bluefish and spot, was reported on Outer Banks Pier Saturday afternoon. Sea mullet fishing was good again Sunday.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported good spot fishing Saturday morning but mediocre action Sunday.
Scattered blues, a few mullet, several speckled trout and lots of skate were landed on Avon Pier during the weekend.
Only a few sea mullet were taken on Frisco Pier Saturday, but fishing improved Sunday with small bottom fish, a few gray trout and puppy drum weighing as much as 6 pounds taken.
Surf fishing from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was slow over the weekend. Some small bottom fish and tailor bluefish were landed around Oregon Inlet. A good run of gray trout developed on the inlet's south side late Saturday afternoon. Most of the 1- to 4-pound trout were taken on Fin-S lures.
Sea mullet, spot, pompano, bluefish and puppy drum were landed Saturday along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. Fishing was slow in the area Sunday.
Puppy drum fishing was good at Cape Point over the weekend. About 30 drum, up to 40 inches, were beached overnight Saturday, and several were released Sunday morning, including a 26-pounder.
Scattered puppy drum, flounder, small black drum and small bluefish were landed by surf fishermen from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet during the weekend. The best puppy drum action was south of ramp 55.
Headboat fishing in the ocean east of Oregon Inlet was good Saturday, with sea bass and triggerfish plentiful. Private boats trolling in the ocean south of the inlet caught Spanish mackerel and tailor bluefish.
A few tuna and wahoo were landed Saturday by the Oregon Inlet and Pirates Cove fleets in the Gulf Stream near ``the point,'' southeast of Oregon Inlet. Good catches of king mackerel were reported from the 70-degree tower.
Blue water charters off Hatteras caught fair numbers of wahoo, dolphin and a few tuna Saturday. One sailfish was released.
No boats went offshore Sunday.
Surf fishing for speckled trout along the northern beaches should improve once the inshore water clears.
