COLLEGE BASEBALL WILL COME TO OUTER BANKS

Major college baseball is coming to the Outer Banks.

Colonial Athletic Association rivals Old Dominion and East Carolina will play a regular season game at 7 p.m. on May 5 at Manteo High School.

``We're excited that these two outstanding universities have agreed to play in Dare County,'' County Manager Terry Wheeler said. ``Both schools have outstanding baseball programs and outstanding players.''

Wheeler said that no county tax money would be used to pay for the game.

``We hope that any expenses will be covered by private donations and from ticket sales,'' Wheeler said.

Last season, Old Dominion posted a 39-20 record under first-year coach Tony Guzzo. The Monarchs earned a berth in the NCAA Southeast Regional before losing to Florida State.

Guzzo said he was excited about the game in Manteo.

``Our players are very familiar with the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and the trip will be a wonderful experience,'' Guzzo said. ``The game will provide our program with a great deal of exposure that will benefit our program for years to come.''

East Carolina posted a 29-24 record last season. Coach Gary Overton has a 376-186-1 mark in 11 years.

``Dare County and northeastern North Carolina have a wealth of young baseball talent,'' Overton said. ``Both ECU and ODU have recruited actively in the area.'' by CNB
