Police said Monday two officers patrolling a Friday football game at Green Run High School found a concealed and loaded handgun in a car and arrested a 19-year-old student from another Beach school.
Officers Chris Hession and J.R. Johnson stopped a car in the parking lot after they saw a passenger drinking from a beer bottle, police spokesman Lou Thurston said. A search of the car turned up a .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun in the glove compartment.
It was the third handgun police have reported on a Virginia Beach school property since September.
Police arrested Roger Gray Jr. of the 5300 block of Commons Court and charged him with having a gun on school grounds. Gray, a Kempsville High School student, faces expulsion, police said.
He was released from custody on a promise to return to court.
Officers Hession and Johnson are part of a special 4th Precinct detail assigned to find and confiscate guns in and around schools. Bringing a gun onto school property is a felony.
