A super turnout at last weekend's Souper Saturday 1995 will keep a lot of Isle of Wight County families warm this winter.
Final figures on the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Inc.'s largest fundraiser of the year are not yet available, said Hilda S. Musick, who helped organize Souper Saturday 1995. She would not estimate the number of people from the community who turned up at the all-you-can-eat soup-and-sandwich luncheon held last Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church.
``Although there were not as many people there as last year, things still went pretty good,'' Musick said. ``But we had hoped to make more than last year.''
All proceeds from Souper Saturday 1995 are earmarked for Isle of Wight County's Department of Social Service's fuel assistance program, which suffered severe budget cuts this year.
``The money from the federal fuel assistance program has grown smaller every year, and there has never been enough of it anyway,'' social service director Linda Bean said. ``This money picks up where the federal fuel assistance leaves off and also helps those people who slip between the cracks of the federal program.
``Souper Saturday funds are a godsend to this community.''
Later this month, Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Inc. will present the check to Bean for distribution to needy families this winter. ILLUSTRATION: AT A GLANCE
