Heavy hitters: A group of local golfers will be traveling to Atlantic City this Saturday to compete in a regional portion of the Mercedes Benz Dealer Championships.
The four will represent Phillips Mercedes for the right to compete in the national tournament Jan. 4-7, 1996 in Carlsbad, Calif.
David Phillips sponsored the local event held a couple of weeks ago at Cypress Point to benefit the March of Dimes.
Virginia Beach residents Bruce Martin, Walter Myrdal and Bob Carter will be joined by C.M. Chappell of Elizabeth City, N.C.
Martin, a pharmaceutical company owner, won the A flight competition. Myrdal, owner of Steamatic of Tidewater, won the B, and Carter, a commercial real estate company owner, won the C flight. Chappell, a building contractor, was the low gross winner.
In the local format, 60 players were flighted and played individual stroke play for the right to make the team. In the regional and national events, players will play as a team in a two-ball, best ball format.
Unlimited potential: The Virginia Beach Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its 30th anniversary dinner and auction at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ramada Oceanfront Tower at 57th Street.
Tickets are $100 a couple or $60 an individual and include an annual membership into the chapter.
The event last year raised more than $15,000 for the national organization and is shooting to do more of the same this year. Ducks Unlimited spent more than $840,000 on projects in Virginia last year.
Thursday's event will feature both silent and live auctions, along with several raffles.
For tickets, call Sandy Fortune at 498-6021.
Back in business: Four-time International Sport Karate Association world champion Curtis Bush has finally found a home for his new business - The Curtis Bush Karate Club.
Several months ago, Bush broke from Karate International because he didn't see eye-to-eye on where the company was headed. Since then, he has been looking to secure a location for his own dojo.
All day this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m., he will hold his grand opening at the new home next to Kmart in the Pembroke Mall area of the city.
Joining Bush as instructors in tang soo do, kickboxing, jujitsu, grappling and weapons fighting will be George Kelly, Dr. Harry Riley, Hasie Sweeney, John Willis, Rob Dickason and Joe Countess.
``It's a really good bunch of folks,'' Bush said. ``We're all real happy. All those guys have been with me for years. Yes, I'm real excited to be back at it.''
Bush added that any organization now using his name for profit would be advertising falsely.
