James Lawrence ``Larry'' Cross Sr., 76, of the 3000 block of Verne Ave., died Oct. 19, 1995, in Maryview Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
A Portsmouth native, Larry attended Norfolk County schools and graduated from Wilson High School. He attended Virginia Military Institute. He was a retired Naval Engineer for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For 22 years, Larry was in the Chief Technical section of the Naval Engineering Branch of the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a certified professional engineer and a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. He was a member of Portsmouth Naval Masonic Lodge 100 for over 50 years. Larry was a member of Churchland Baptist Church and previously a deacon of the former South Street Baptist Church. He was a member and past president of the Western Branch Ruritan Club and a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Myrtle Britt Cross; two sons, James L. Cross Jr. of Portsmouth and Bruce L. Cross of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Diane C. Sellers of Fairfax, Va., and Joanne C. Ivy of Park Ridge, Ill.; six grandchildren, Elizabeth and Brian Cross of Portsmouth, Laura, Amy, and David Sellers of Fairfax, and Grea Sellers of Carrollton, Ga.
The family will be at Snellings Funeral Home in Churchland from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Churchland Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery in Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Churchland Baptist Church Building Fund of the American Diabetes Association.
