Action on some of the piers along the northern beaches improved a little Friday.
Kitty Hawk Pier reported slow fishing, and Avalon Pier reported only a few speckled trout and bluefish taken.
Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught some tailor bluefish and a few 2- to 3-pound speckled trout during the morning. Small black drum and tailor blues were landed during the afternoon.
Scattered bluefish and spot were taken from Jennette's Pier.
Outer Banks Pier reported a pretty good run of speckled trout during the morning. A few bluefish and small bottom fish were decked later in the day.
Farther south, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few sea mullet, gray trout and spot.
Sea mullet, spot and small black drum were landed from Avon Pier.
Frisco Pier reported plenty of sea mullet and puppy drum. Some trout and pompano also were taken.
In the surf, trout were scarce north of Kitty Hawk Pier. A few were landed from deeper sloughs along Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head beaches.
Surfcasters along the northern beaches also landed some small bottom fish.
A few speckled trout, scattered bluefish and puppy drum were taken around Oregon Inlet. Some bottom fish were landed from the catwalk on the south side of the Bonner Bridge.
Puppy drum, sea mullet, spot and a few pompano were beached by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Puppy drum weighing as much as 22 pounds and some nice flounder were landed from Cape Point Thursday night. Quite a few nice puppy drum, tailor bluefish and one 30-pound jack crevalle were taken from Cape Point Friday.
A few small puppy drum and bluefish were caught along the beach from Frisco to False Point. Some nice flounder were taken in Hatteras Inlet.
Good catches of pigfish and sea bass were reported by headboats fishing outside Oregon Inlet.
King mackerel catches were good east, southeast of Oregon Inlet.
In the Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet, tuna fishing was fair. Most of the yellowfin were small. A few dolphin were taken along with the tuna.
The Hatteras charter fleet reported fair yellowfin tuna and wahoo catches. King mackerel fishing was good inside ``the hook.'' Sailfish were released by the Wahoo, the Citation and the Tuna Duck. A bluefin tuna with an estimated weight of 400 pounds was released by the Connector.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 69.5 degrees Friday. by CNB
