STATE FIELD MISSING CHESAPEAKE PLAYER

For the first time in recent memory, Chesapeake will not have a golfer contending in the Group AAA State Tournament opening Monday in Gainesville.

The lone representative from the Southeastern District is Churchland's Robert Davis, who finished in a tie for second place in the Eastern Region tourney Tuesday at Red Wing in Virginia Beach.

Cox and Granby grabbed the two team berths with Churchland finishing fifth and Great Bridge and Western Branch tying for sixth. Cox won with 309-307-616. Churchland had 645, and the Wildcats and Bruins both had 652.

Medalist honors went to Kellam's Adam Dixon with 73-74-147. Davis was in a four-way tie for second at 151. In a playoff between these four, Salem's Kevin Miller won the second-place medal with a second-hole birdie. Davis was third with a par on the third extra hole. Fourth went to Troy Cummings of Cox.

Great Bridge coach Bill Welch says he's hoping this will be the year for Cox coach Stuart Holland to get his first state title. In the past four years under Holland, the Falcons have been runner-up three times and third once. Two of the years the titles went to Great Bridge.

``After we lost that early match to Deep Creek, we were pleased to come back and win the regular season and the district tournament,'' said Welch.

In the regional, the Wildcats were led by No. 1 player Matt Perron with 78-82-160. He missed qualifying for the state by five shots.

Western Branch was paced by Scott Wasco with 84-77-161.

Deep Creek's Chris Huntzinger was three strokes off qualifying with 159.

The 36-hole state tournament will be Monday and Tuesday over the new Virginia Oaks course. by CNB
