A wind shift and cooler weather over the weekend resulted in good drum fishing on Hatteras Island.
Plenty of puppy drum, along with some big drum, were beached Saturday morning at Cape Point. Action continued throughout the day. Some nice flounder, speckled trout and a few jack crevalle also were taken.
Drum as large as 48 inches were landed overnight Saturday. Drum releases at Cape Point Saturday night included a 47-incher by Dave Ferris of Nags Head. Puppy drum also were plentiful Saturday night and throughout the day Sunday. Sea mullet and speckled trout were taken by anglers fishing along the beach on both the north and south sides of Cape Point during the day Sunday. Five- to 8-pound puppy drum were plentiful again Sunday night, with several fish weighing as much as 30 pounds.
Surf fishing along the northern beaches was fair over the weekend, with scattered puppy drum, tailor bluefish and some nice mullet taken.
Some puppy drum and bluefish were taken on cut bait from the north side of Oregon Inlet. Excellent catches of gray trout were reported from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet Saturday night. Most of the fish were taken on bucktails. Trout fishing was mediocre in the Green Island Sough area.
Puppy drum, gray trout, speckled trout, some nice sea mullet and a few albacore were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Puppy drum action was excellent Saturday in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. Plenty of 5- to 8-pound puppy drum were taken on cut bait, along with speckled trout, gray trout, bluefish and some sea mullet. Fishing also was productive to Buxton.

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow Saturday and Sunday.
Kitty Hawk Pier reported a handful of trout and puppy drum taken.
A few spot and croaker were landed Saturday on Avalon Pier. A 9-pound puppy drum was decked by Michael Bair of Coinjock. A few 2- to 3-pound speckled trout were taken from the pier Sunday morning.
Some black drum, croaker, spot, speckled trout and nice sea mullet were landed by anglers on Nags Head Pier. The largest mullet reported, weighing 2 pounds, was taken by Reggie Littleton of Richmond.
Scattered black drum, small bottom fish and a few trout were caught over the weekend on Jennette's Pier.
Anglers on Outer Banks Pier landed black drum, croaker, sea mullet, small puppy drum and a few speckled trout.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported small black drum and a few bottom fish.
Fishing was slow Saturday on Avon Pier. Drum weighing as much as 20 pounds were landed Saturday night. A few bluefish, sea mullet, small black drum and large puppy drum were taken Sunday.
Frisco Pier reported good puppy drum fishing Saturday. Action slowed Sunday, with only a few sea mullet, toadfish and flounder landed.
Inshore and offshore boating activities were virtually nonexistent Saturday because of the weather. Fishing action resumed Sunday with good catches of king mackerel reported by charters fishing east, southeast of Oregon Inlet. The king mackerel, weighing between 5 and 15 pounds, were taken on spoons and strips pulled deep.
Tuna fishing was fair in the Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet Sunday. A few dolphin and wahoo also were taken. A sailfish was released by the Mad Hatter.
Blue-water charters off Hatteras reported some king mackerel Sunday, along with scattered wahoo, tuna and dolphin. One sailfish was released by the Tuna Duck.
Speckled trout action in sloughs along the northern beaches should be good today, providing winds continue light and swells subside.
The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 68.5 degrees Monday. by CNB
