Tillie Cowell Powell, 66, of Route 2, died Monday night, Oct. 23, 1995, in her residence.
She was a native of Currituck County, where she was a member of the Pilmoor United Methodist Church. Mrs. Powell was co-founder, with her husband, of Powell's Pick Your Own Produce and Powell Farm Sporting Clays Range. She was President of the Currituck Farm Bureau, and served on the Currituck County Board of Adjustments from 1975 to 1992, where she had served as Chairperson. In 1984, Mrs. Powell received the State Award for Outstanding Woman of the Year in Agriculture for North Carolina. Other memberships include Daughters of the American Revolution, Albemarle Criminal Justice Partnership Program and the Shawboro Ruritan Club. Mrs. Powell was the daughter of the late Marshall P. and Mrs. Susan Boswood Cowell, and the wife of Leon Powell.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Susan Earley and her husband, Bill Earley, of Ahoskie, N.C., Marsha Powell of Shawboro, N.C.; one son, William Powell of Shawboro; one sister, Elizabeth Cowell Gibbs of Sligo, N.C.; and a niece, Dwan Gibbs Craft of Moyock, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, N.C., with the Rev. C.H. Wellons and the Rev. Bruce Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Cowell Family Cemetery in Shawboro. The family will be at the residence.
