SALEM'S COLEBANK MAKES VERBAL COMMITMENT TO JAMES MADISON

Misty Colebank, The Virginian-Pilot girls basketball player of the year last winter, has made a verbal commitment to attend James Madison.

Colebank, a 5-foot-9 point guard, said she made her decision last weekend after visiting JMU. Her only other visit was to Old Dominion. She canceled trips to East Carolina and George Mason.

A three-year starter, the Salem senior averaged 13.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3 assists for the Sun Devils last year.

``JMU is far enough for me to get away and close enough for me to come home,'' said Colebank, who has already satisfied the freshman eligibility standards. ``The people and the environment are great. I think I'll be able to fit in real well and I'll be able to contribute.''

James Madison compiled a 22-7 record and was second behind ODU with a 13-1 Colonial Athletic Association finish.

``I think Misty will do just terrific in college,'' said Salem coach Larry Bowman. ``She should be able to step in and play right away. At 5-10, 5-11, she's got size that most point guards don't have. It's nice to have a point guard who can see the floor the way she does.''

In boys basketball, Ricardo Trevisan, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward from Maury by way of Granby and Brazil, has given an oral commitment to play at UNC-Greensboro.

Trevisan transferred to Maury in September after playing last season as a foreign-exchange student at Granby. He averaged 3.4 points in 21 games for the Comets, who won the Eastern District championship.

``The recruiting process is all pretty new to him,'' Maury coach Jack Baker said. ``He wanted to get it over with.''

Trevisan canceled visits to Radford and Rider.

UNC-Greensboro is an independent playing in Division I. It recruited Trevisan for his size and potential, Baker said.

``He shoots pretty well, runs the floor pretty well and has good hands,'' Baker said.

Damon Thornton of Atlantic Shores has tentatively trimmed his list of colleges to six, Seahawks coach Mark Phelps said.

Thornton, a 6-8 forward, received home visits from Virginia Tech, Maryland, Syracuse, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Xavier, Dayton, Western Kentucky and Liberty. He has trimmed Dayton, Western Kentucky and Liberty from the list, Phelps said.

Phelps spiked rumors that Thornton plans to sign in November.

``He wants to sign in the spring,'' Phelps said. ``If he does that some other schools may get involved. Georgetown, Wake Forest and Pitt saw him late (in the summer) and said they will recruit him if he doesn't sign early.''

The NCAA limits recruits to five campus visits and Thornton may take his first one this weekend to Syracuse, Phelps said.

Kenny Inge, a 6-7 forward and Thornton's teammate, is leaning toward spending a year at Hargrave Military Academy. by CNB
