I am grateful to the citizens of Norfolk and the greater Hampton Roads area for the magnificent display of support for the U.S. Navy on the occasion of our 220th birthday. Special thanks are in order to Mayor Paul Fraim and his staff, Karen Scherberger of Festevents, and the Nauticus National Maritime Center. They gave us a celebration we'll long remember.
More than 4,000 people, sailors and citizens alike, were treated to a wonderful program at Nauticus and Town Point Park throughout the afternoon, and an estimated 25,000 enjoyed the Navy birthday concert with Kathy Mattea that evening. We look forward to making a large-scale celebration like this an annual event in Hampton Roads.
