Nonfarm employment in Hampton Roads rose 2.2 percent, or 14,000, from last August to 636,600 despite the loss of 3,100 government jobs, mostly in the federal civilian-defense sector. The height of the tourism season at beaches and historic attractions boosted employment levels in services by 8,000 and trade by 2,800. Construction increased by 2,300, followed by manufacturing and transportation, both up by 1,600. Nonfarm employment in Virginia reached 3,067,700, an increase of 56,300, or 1.9 percent, above the August 1994 level. The private sector saw strong annual job growth of 72,400, or 3 percent.
