POOR DAY AT NORTHERN PIERS MEANS PALTRY PISCINE CATCHES

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was generally slow Friday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported a few speckled trout landed even though sea grass was thick.

On Avalon Pier, a few small blues and flounder were landed during the morning. A big speckled trout, weighing 5.75 pounds, was taken by K.K.O. Negas of Bethany Beach, Del., on a green grub.

A few tailor blues, speckled trout and small flounder were caught from Nags Head Pier.

Anglers on Jennette's Pier landed quite a few small speckled trout on bucktails during the morning. Later, a few flounder and trout were taken.

Scattered small black drum were caught throughout the day on Outer Banks Pier.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few speckled trout, bluefish and puppy drum.

Avon Pier reported a few flounder and bluefish taken in the morning and slow fishing over the afternoon.

Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishermen from Corolla to Oregon Inlet caught a few bottom fish, small blues, speckled trout and an occasional puppy drum.

A few speckled trout, bluefish and puppy drum were landed around Oregon Inlet in the morning.

Black drum, sea mullet and a few puppy drum were taken along the beach from Oregon Inlet to Buxton. The best of the puppy drum action was in the Pea Island area.

At Cape Point, lots of puppy drum were beached Thursday night. Nice flounder, small blues, sea mullet and a few puppy drum were caught Friday.

Good catches of bluefish were reported from the Hatteras Inlet area Thursday evening. Trout also were plentiful. Small blues, sea mullet and croakers were taken by surf fishermen from Frisco to False Point Friday.

Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet Friday with some limits reported taken. Tuna fishing was good northeast of the inlet. King mackerel action was fair. A number of white marlin were released by the Oregon Inlet and Pirates Cove fleets.

Charter boats reported good king mackerel fishing inside ``the Hook'' off Hatteras. A few wahoo and tuna were landed by the Hatteras offshore fleet.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 70 degrees on Friday. by CNB
