BOOKERS SHED A CLOUD, BLANK MAURY

Booker T. Washington football players couldn't wait to get on the field Friday night against Maury.

With a rumored probe involving a potentially ineligible player weighing on their minds, the No. 5 Bookers scored three touchdowns in the second half for a 20-0 win over the Commodores in an Eastern District game at Harbor Park.

Booker T. (7-1 overall, 3-0 district) clinched at least a tie for first place in the district and forgot about an investigation that could cause it to forfeit several games for allegedly playing an ineligible player.

``During practice we were down about that investigation,'' said Bookers running back Shawn Minter, who rushed for 148 yards on 23 carries. ``We still know we're No. 1 in the district. We don't care what they say.''

Booker T. came out sluggish in the first half, punting on three possessions and throwing an interception on another.

But Maury (2-6, 1-1) failed to take advantage of the Bookers' mistakes.

After intermission and a missed 50-yard field goal attempt by Maury's Mike Glover, the Bookers went 80 yards on seven plays for a touchdown. Dominic Perry hit Marlos Thomas for a 22-yard score.

Michael Wilson then intercepted a pass to set up an 11-yard scoring run by Minter.

The Bookers' defense did the rest. Delvin Young picked up a Maury fumble and went 40 yards for the final margin.

``We came out determined in the second half,'' said Young, who had three sacks. ``We had to take this game to show that we can win no matter what happens.''

Green Run 57 Kellam 0

VIRGINIA BEACH - Lanier Washington pulled in three receptions - two for touchdowns and the other a deadly 46-yarder that sparked a scoring drive - as the No. 2 Stallions improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the Beach District.

Washington scored on receptions of 51 and 23 yards. Larron Jones struck on runs of 15 and 1. Plaxico Burress was all over the field, kicking four extra points, running in a conversion and grabbing a 48-yard touchdown pass.

The Stallions' air attack dismantled Kellam (1-7, 0-7). Ed Cuffee completed 6 of 7 attempts with three touchdowns. Five of his completed passes were more than 23 yards.

Tallwood 20 Bayside 7

VIRGINIA BEACH - TaRon Anderson caught a touchdown pass and ran for two scores as the admittedly flat No. 4 Lions tuned up for next week's showdown with Beach leader Green Run.

The Lions, who picked up a chant of ``Green Run! Green Run!'' within seconds of the final gun, improved to 7-1 overall, 6-1 district. Bayside fell to 2-6, 2-5.

Anderson (25 carries, 85 yards) scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards and also caught a 19-yard TD pass from Gilbert Harris (5 of 6, 69 yards).

Bayside, which trailed 14-0 at halftime, got its lone score on the opening possession of the second half when running back Jermerll Ford took a screen pass 37 yards for a touchdown.

Bayside quarterback Jimmy Walker, who completed 80 percent of his passes a week ago, was 13 of 19 Friday for 129 yards. The Lions swarmed the Marlin receivers as soon as they caught the ball, however; only two of Walker's completions were for more than nine yards.

Granby 14 Lake Taylor 0

NORFOLK - Alex Sunkins and Anthony King each scored fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Comets spoiled Lake Taylor's homecoming at Chittum Field.

Following a scoreless first half in which the Lake Taylor (3-6, 0-3 Eastern District) had two Ronyell Whitaker touchdowns called back by penalties, Sunkins raced 73 yards to put Granby on the board with 6:47 remaining.

Granby (4-7, 1-2), which amassed 312 yards of total offense, charged back two minutes later after forcing the Titans to punt.

King, who had just 21 yards prior to his touchdown, made it 14-0 when he streaked 66 yards for the score and then sneaked into the end zone for the conversion to ice the game with 4:48 left to play.

Sunkins led the Comets with 179 yards on 14 carries.

Whitaker, whose team was held to four first downs, gained 67 yards for the Titans.

Cox 28 First Colonial 7

VIRGINIA BEACH - Aaron Strausbaugh intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown and setting up a score with the other as the Falcons handed the Patriots their seventh consecutive loss.

Strausbaugh's 37-yard return gave Cox (4-4, 4-3 Beach) a 28-0 fourth-quarter lead. Strausbaugh intercepted Minor's previous pass giving the Falcons possession at their 37. Six plays later Darryl Mills scored on a 43-yard run for 21-0 cushion.

Cox, which had only four first downs to First Colonial's 13, had no first downs in the first half, punting on each of its four possessions. But the Falcons grabbed a 7-0 lead on an 83-yard punt return by Johnny Williams.

Cox made it 14-0 when Leroy Ellsworth ran 29 yards for a score.

Carlton Winston ran 110 yards on 18 carries for First Colonial (1-7, 1-6).

Churchland 14 Norview 6

PORTSMOUTH - No. 8 Churchland kept alive its hopes for its best football season since 1981 while virtually eliminating any postseason hopes for No. 9 Norview.

The Truckers, now 5-3 with a 6-4 record the school's best in the last 14 years, made their ground game superior to the passing of the Pilots (4-4) in the homecoming victory.

Churchland racked up 277 yards on the ground with Aaron Bailey scoring on a 13-yard run in the first quarter and Otis Jones breaking away for a 24-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Norview scored on a 23-yard run by quarterback James Whitley, who passed for 143 yards but had two aerials intercepted.

Churchland also recovered two Norview fumbles. Nose guard/fullback Termaine Sessoms, a two-way standout, pounced on one of the fumbles and blocked the Norview extra point attempt that preserved a 7-6 Churchland lead. Sessoms also rushed for 70 yards in 15 attempts. Halfback Bailey racked up 117 yards in only 10 carries.

Freeman scored on runs of 5 and 4 yards in the second quarter. Jose Mojica completed 6 of 10 passes for 100 yards for Salem (5-3, 5-2).

Mike Majette of Princess Anne (2-6, 1-6) continued his assault on the area career rushing mark, gaining 173 yards on 31 carries to become the second South Hampton Roads runner to surpass 4,000 yards.
