NO HOLDS BARRED ON MIXING PRINTS A LITTLE FLORAL PRINT HERE, A PLAID THERE AND THE CHAIR HAS A BOLD NEW LOOK

THE PATCHWORK LOOK has arrived. Those in the know will dare to combine two or more fabrics on one piece of furniture this redecorating season.

This inviting chair from Calico Corners easily wears plaid on its body and a large-scale floral print on its back and seat cushion. The look can become even more dramatic with the addition of a checked throw pillow that harmonizes. Right now, bold is beautiful. IF ORANGE ISN'T YOUR COLOR

If the kids or a clumsy ghost drops the jack-o-lantern on one of your fine carpets, there is a special ``witch's brew'' that should make the mess disappear. From The Carpet and Rug Institute in Dalton, Ga., come these instructions for removing smashed pumpkins from rugs:

Immediately pick up large pieces and seeds. Then mix one teaspoon liquid dish-washing detergent with one cup of lukewarm water. Blot, don't scrub, the area with the solution. Rinse well with clear water. If the spot remains, mix two tablespoons of household ammonia per cup of water and blot the area again. Rinse well with clear water.

If that doesn't do the trick, treat yourself to additional free advice from the rug institute. The toll-free hotline is (800) 882-8846. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
