After two lopsided regular-season outings, Norfolk Academy didn't want the third meeting against Nansemond-Suffolk Academy to be the charmer.
So in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools field hockey championships Saturday afternoon at Norfolk Academy, the Bulldogs scored early and often en route to a 6-0 championship victory that continued their domination over N-SA.
Norfolk Academy beat the Saints 6-1 and 4-0 in the regular season.
``We came in thinking about the saying `the third time's a charm', '' said Mason White, who was named the tournament's most outstanding offensive player. ``Just because we'd beaten them badly the first two games didn't mean we could let our heads get too big.''
It was obvious that the Bulldogs weren't going to let Nansemond-Suffolk (10-8-2) doing any charming as Mary Burroughs scored in the second minute of the contest.
Jennifer Holbrook then pounded in two goals before halftime to give Norfolk Academy (16-3) a 3-0 halftime edge. Sue Feakins got the assist on the third goal.
``I was wondering if the game was going to be like the other two when we scored so early,'' first-year Bulldogs coach Mary Werkheiser said. ``I don't know what it is about playing (N-SA). We struggled to get by lots of teams this year and they're clearly a good team.''
Norfolk Academy put any Saints' comeback thoughts to rest with just under 18 minutes left when Courtney Coalter banged in a crossing pass from Lauren Berger.
About five minutes later, White got into the act when she dribbled past two defenders and let fly a blast just past the left post.
The Bulldogs leading scorer Merrick Michaels got on the board near game's end when she took a pass from White to make it 6-0.
Nansemond-Suffolk's Lanz Smith was named the tournament's outstanding defensive player.
