COX GRAD SET TO BREAK JMU FIELD HOCKEY ASSIST MARK

There are those athletes, professional and amateur, who like to keep track of their personal statistics in search of fame and glory.

Then there are athletes like James Madison field hockey standout Heather Hoehlein, who don't even realize they have tied or set a record because they are more interested in team goals.

Well Hoehlein, a Cox High School graduate, has tied the single-season assist record at James Madison with 17.

``I am truly honored by it,'' Hoehlein said when asked about the record. ``I get more satisfaction out of the team doing well though. I worry more about us as a team than I do about myself.''

Hoehlein, a senior, has had numerous matches where she has more than one assist. In the Lady Dukes' 7-2 win over LaSalle, Hoehlein had five assists, a school record.

She had four assists in a 4-3 win over Duke, two in a 5-0 win over Radford and two in a 4-3 loss to Penn State.

Hoehlein, who wants to be a veterinarian after graduating, also took part in winning a national championship last season. She accomplished a dream most college athletes wake up in a cold sweat to.

``When I got here I didn't even fathom it,'' Hoehlein said. ``Each year we got further (in the postseason) all the way up to winning it all last year. It was the best feeling.''

Now that she and her teammates are on top, everyone will be gunning for them - a challenge they welcome with open arms.

``That last game last season wasn't our potential,'' Hoehlein said. ``We definitely can improve. Everyone will try to play their best game against us.''
