RISING TIDES LEAD FIRST DAY OF HATTERAS TOURNAMENT

The Rising Tides surf fishing team pulled 11 fish through the breakers of Hatteras Island Thursday to take a narrow opening-day lead in the 38th annual Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Tournament.

The Nags Head team scored 131 points, just one more than the 130 scored by the Singing the Blues team, which caught six fish. Fish are scored by length.

The South Jersey Surfcasters are third with 22 scoring fish and 94 points, while the Mer-Mullets, the defending women's squad, lead that category and are 9th overall. The team has six fish and 63 points.

The defending men's team, the Eastern Shore of Virginia Anglers Club, is 18th overall with 16 fish and 48 points.

Thursday's largest channel bass by a male angler was a 28 1/4-inch catch by Sean Mulligan of Singing The Blues, while the biggest by a female was a 26-inch catch by Janie Neuman of the Mer-Mullets.

The largest bluefish by a female was an 18-inch chopper caught by Lynette Sawyer of the Fish Squeezers, while the top male blue was a 21 1/4-inch catch by Ted Moseley of The Rising Tides.

Team competition continues today, with two sessions. On Saturday, an individual tournament, open to anyone, will be staged.

Members of The Rising Tides are: Pat Preston, Harvey Kelly, Richard Harcum, Donnie Ross, Budd McLendon and Ted Moseley.

The Singing the Blues team features Bo Abbott, Pat Flavin, Steve McGovern, Joe Crist, Sean Mulligan and Rich Wakefield.
