Hampton Roads Academy scored two goals in the second half for a 3-1 win over Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools boys soccer tournament championship Saturday.
Kingsly McAdam booted a corner kick over a crowd of Saints defenders at the 35:10 mark and Matt Bechncke scored with just under nine minutes left to give the Navigators (19-4-1) their third TCIS title in five years.
``Their second goal was just one of those things,'' Nansemond-Suffolk coach Tom Gill said. ``(McAdam) hit it perfectly and it went right into the net. Those things happen in championship games.''
Hampton Roads opened the scoring when Bechncke assisted Will Swink 18 minutes into the first half.
The Saints (15-6), playing in their first TCIS championship game, answered with five minutes left until halftime when Jay Habel scored off a rebound of Jonathan Duman's corner kick.
The Navigators threatened late in the first half, but failed on two corner kicks and Nansemond-Suffolk goalie Richard Starkey made a diving save on a shot by Swink.
``They just outplayed us today,'' Habel said. ``We just didn't have the touch. For the most part they controlled the ball.''
The Saints managed just five shots on goal in the second half after scoring seven goals in splitting two regular-season games with the Navigators.
``They definitely stepped it up on defense,'' said Nansemond-Suffolk's Gabe Valencia. The opportunities we did get we couldn't finish.''
Hampton Roads' Griff Bechncke, who led the TCIS in goals scored during the regular season, was named the tournament's offensive MVP, while the Saints' Nick Garbarino was the defensive MVP. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
