Even though Kendra Robins spent the last eight minutes of Saturday's Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools girls basketball championship without one of her contact lenses, the Norfolk Academy junior never lost sight of victory.
With two seconds remaining in overtime, Robins drove through the lane and laid up the game winner to lift the Bulldogs 49-48 over Nansemond-Suffolk Academy for their first TCIS tournament crown since 1988.
``With about a minute left my contact finally popped back in my eye,'' Robins said.
``I just cut to the ball and tried to create something. I threw up the shot and it went in. It's a great way to end the season.''
N-SA's season came to an end when the Bulldogs (11-2) gained possession with 39 seconds to play following Allison Dunn's basket that gave the Saints a 48-47 lead.
N-SA coach Larry Riggs used his last timeout to put the Saints in position, but Robins worked the clock to perfection for the Bulldogs' second buzzer beating win over the Saints this season.
``I guess they just outplayed us,'' N-SA's Ann Murden said. ``Our shots weren't falling.''
The Saints (11-1) managed a 20-14 halftime lead before the Bulldogs went on a 20-8 third-quarter run, sparked by Kate Rowen's four steals and eight points.
But the Saints responded in the fourth with a 14-8 run as they kept the Bulldogs scoreless for 5:13 with Leslie Greskevitch denying Robins a break at the basket.
``It takes the best to bring out the best,'' Norfolk Academy coach Joanne Renn said.
Robins led three Norfolk Academy players in double figures with 15 points. Angie Hucles, the tournament's most valuable player, had 14 and Rowen chipped in 11.
