The Salem girls and Tallwood boys volleyball teams captured Beach District tournament championships Saturday at Tallwood High.
In the opening competition, Salem defeated Kempsville 16-14, 1-15, 15-11. Tallwood followed with a 13-15, 15-7, 15-9 victory over Cox.
All four teams advance to next week's Eastern Region tournament at Tallwood.
In Monday's girls quarterfinals, Kempsville will play Maury at 6 p.m., followed by Salem against Booker T. Washington at 7:30 p.m. Tabb and Indian River open the competition at 4:30 p.m. Western Branch gets a bye into Tuesday's semifinals.
In Tuesday's first-ever boys region tournament, Tallwood faces Great Bridge at 3 p.m., followed by Cox against Western Branch at 4:30 p.m.
After taking a close opener, Salem (17-3) totally fell apart in the second game.
``I guess it was the excitement from the first game,'' said Sun Devils hitter Renee Dorko, who finished with nine kills and 12-of-14 serving. ``We realized we had to get our act together in the third game if we wanted to take home those trophies and banners.''
Salem shared the regular-season title with Kempsville (16-4) and Cox.
Jenny Harmon led Salem with 14 kills and five solo blocks. Misty Colebank had five kills and was 14 of 15 serving.
Tallwood continued its home-court hex on Cox in the boys final. Since the Beach began boys volleyball three years ago, the Falcons have never beaten Tallwood (19-1) on the Lions court.
``We've only lost twice here,'' coach David Early said. ``It was First Colonial both times.''
After losing a close first game to Cox (17-3), the Lions battled back to take the second - setting up a 31-sideout marathon for the title.
``Our games with them are usually this intense,'' said junior hitter Kevin Jones, who led both teams with 20 kills. ``We love playing here. This was fun.''
Chuck Beeson and Pat Rooney each had 10 kills for Tallwood, and Mac Hall had some key blocks on the Falcons' middle hitters. by CNB
