Recently I received a 3 a.m. phone call telling me that Officer Daniel E. Eaker had found one of my hunting dogs on Route 17 and would meet me at the 7-Eleven on Cedar Road. Not many officers would go to the trouble of catching a dog and calling the owner. I feel a personal loss with his death, as will all of Chesapeake.
How many more lives must be lost before the state makes Route 17 a four-lane road like North Carolina? Even if the state would widen it by four feet, it would be a great help. Cars often run off the edge and lose control or crowd the center line, sometimes knocking the mirror off an oncoming vehicle.
