A North Carolina man died Monday when his pickup truck burst into flames after colliding with another vehicle.
Darryl J. Ballard, 36, of Eure, N.C., was pronounced dead at the scene, said Tammy Van Dame, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police.
Van Dame said that Ballard ran a stop sign at the intersection of State Routes 189 and 714 at about 11:49 a.m.
Ballard's truck, a 1987 Chevrolet, collided with a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim driven by La'Marchell Joyner, of Aulander, N.C. Ballard's truck was forced from the road and caught fire. As a witness attempted to pull Ballard from his truck, the gas tank of the truck exploded.
Joyner and the passengers in the Acclaim were taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
All three passengers are from Murphreesboro, N.C. They are Telisha Gary, 21, Charles Brooks, 22, and Helena Long, 22.
Van Dame said it is unknown whether Ballard was wearing a seatbelt.
