Clarence R. Sanders, 68, a resident of Neptune Beach, Fla., for the past 28 years, passed away Friday, Nov. 10, 1995, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Candler, Fla., he retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service, followed by retirement from the U.S. Government civil service after 16 years.
Mr. Sanders served aboard the USS BELLEAU WOOD during the signing of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan in 1945, receiving the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of Fleet Reserve (NU)290, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post (NU)3270 and American Legion Post (NU)316.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Lamb Sanders; seven daughters, Shirley Ann Bowe of Norfolk, Gloria Jean Smith of Orange, Texas, Linda Sue Sanders and Arlene Frances Walter, both of Neptune Beach, Fla., Diane Marie Shuler of Newport News, Hannah Ellen Sanders and Claire Ruth Sanders, both of Neptune Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary Lou Cheatom of Ocala, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 1995, in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, Fla., with Rev. Ralph Young officiating. Interment with full military honors followed at Beaches Memorial Gardens.
