THE FEW, THE TOUGH, THE FISH CATCHERS

Cool weather and strong northwest winds Wednesday kept many anglers indoors, but those who ventured out caught fish.

Two- to three-pound speckled trout were abundant throughout the day on Kitty Hawk Pier. The fish were caught about halfway out on the pier, and hit almost anything put in front of them.

Avalon Pier reported some speckled trout, 2-pound bluefish and a few puppy drum during the morning. A few puppy drum were taken during the afternoon.

A few trout, sea mullet and bluefish were taken early in the day from Nags Head Pier. One striped bass below the minimum size was released. One striper was lost, and a few speckled trout were landed during the afternoon.

Anglers on Jennette's Pier caught several puppy drum throughout the day. Scattered small puppy drum were hooked and released on Outer Banks Pier.

South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught a handful of puppy drum and a few black drum. The water was dirty at Avon Pier, and skates were the only catch. Frisco Pier reported very slow fishing.

Some speckled trout were landed from sloughs at various locations along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. A few trout, puppy drum and a couple of striped bass were beached around Oregon Inlet.

Surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton landed fair numbers of black drum and puppy drum. Some nice speckled trout were taken along the beach north of Cape Point near the lighthouse. Fishing was fairly slow in the Frisco area.

No boats went offshore along the Dare Coast Wednesday because of windy conditions.

Speckled trout fishing should be good along the beach as soon as the water clears inshore.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 55.5 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
