A police officer and a teacher who were trying to break up a fight at Nansemond River High School were injured Wednesday morning.
One of the students in the fight also was hurt.
Officer A.L. Boone, who is assigned to the school, found three students fighting in a hall about 8:07 a.m. He broke up the fight but had to restrain a fourth student - Dwayne Eugene Hines, 18 - who became combative, trying to get involved, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
Hines swung his arms, hitting Boone in the face with his elbow, and the officer wrestled him to the floor and handcuffed him, Simpkins said. During the scuffle, Boone's shirt got soiled and bloody and his police badge, which popped off his belt, was stolen.
Spencer Mayfield, a teacher who helped break up the initial fight, suffered a broken arm. In that altercation, Antione Saunders, 19, was cut under his right eye and on his lip.
Hines, who lives in the 6000 block of College Drive, has been arrested and charged with assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and destroying property. He was in Western Tidewater Regional Jail Wednesday afternoon, in lieu of $1,000 bail.
Hines, Saunders and two other students - Kevin Morton, 18, and a 17-year-old whose name was not released because he is a juvenile - were suspended.
An investigation is continuing, and Simpkins said more charges are expected. Police said the fight stemmed from an off-campus event.
