THE CASTLE BURNS: FIRE DESTROYS SHOWPLACE; OWNERS JUMP TO SAFETY

Fire has destroyed The Castle, a showplace residence east of Edenton on Yeopim Road.

Greg and Marilyn Miller-Haden, who owned the 5,000-square-foot property, had begun decorating the residence for Christmas. The house was to have been included in this year's Historic Edenton Candlelight Christmas Tour.

Edenton Fire Chief Lynn Perry said experts from the State Bureau of Investigation had been asked to help find the cause of the blaze.

Perry said his department routinely notifies the SBI when a major fire occurs within his jurisdiction.

The Hadens told Perry a smoke alarm awakened them early Saturday and the fast-spreading fire forced them to jump to safety through a ground-floor window.

In 1994, Greg Haden announced that ``The Castle'' would be ``given'' to the writer of the best essay about why the writer wanted the rambling abode with its unusual furnishings and three-car garage. Entrants were asked to pay $25 to enter a contest. A winner has never been announced, and the Hadens have remained in the home. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by DREW C. WILSON, The Virginian-Pilot
