WANCHESE REC CENTER OK'D: Funds for a new multi-use recreational facility in Wanchese were approved Monday by the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
By a 6-0 vote, the panel approved a transfer of $375,000 from the county's capital reserve fund to pay for the new facility, which will include two baseball/softball diamonds and a soccer field.
Commissioners also unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons on county property. The North Carolina General Assembly has passed legislation allowing private citizens to carry concealed weapons.
In other business, the board approved a contract between the county and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to build 5.8 miles of sidewalk in Duck.
Under local legislation passed by the General Assembly, a beautification district tax will assess 5 cents per $100 of property value in Duck for two years, and 1 cent per $100 in property value for each year thereafter for construction and maintenance of the sidewalks.

CROP SPRAYER GROUNDED: A Pasquotank County crop duster has had his aerial pesticide applicator's license revoked for one year for illegally spraying near a home, business and three highways last August.
The North Carolina Pesticide Board found Herman Ray Meads of Halstead Boulevard in Elizabeth City guilty of violating seven state pesticide laws and five regulations. Meads, who faced a two-year license revocation, was also fined $1,000. by CNB
