SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION

Eleven candidates will seek five seats on the School Board in a special election Dec. 19.

The election is the city's first for School Board. Board members in the past have been appointed by City Council.

The election originally was to have been held in May 1994. But a disagreement with the U.S. Justice Department over the city's at-large voting system delayed the ballot. The disagreement was resolved in August, so a special election was set for December.

The remaining four seats on the nine-member board will go on the ballot in May.

Monday was the deadline for candidates to file to run in the special election.

The list of candidates includes four incumbents: L. Thomas Bray, board Vice Chairwoman Barbara B. Head, James M. Reeves Sr. and Roderic A. Taylor.

The other candidates on file in the city voter registrar's office are Donald J. Bailey, Renee Hannas, Mary F. Mazur, Harry A. Murphy, Theodore G. ``Ted'' Nance, Jeffrey A. ``Jeff'' Rowland and Michael J. Woods.
