LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - ISLE OF WIGHT

Parade was a success

As co-chair of the Isle of Wight Veterans' Day Parade Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the weekend of Nov. 10-11 a success.

I want to publicly thank a great committee that brought together a weekend of events that seemed almost impossible to accomplish in a short time span. Evelyn Chandler, parade coordinator; Bob Hannon, publicity chair; Pat Kessler, secretary; Elwin Kessler and Debra Weir, co-chairs representing Isle of Wight Parks and Recreation; Martha Grace, chair of Commission on Aging; and Jerry Nabors, Sam Naibauer and Les Byrges.

Bob Hannon started the weekend off with his great effort in bringing the U.S. Army Continental Command Band to Smithfield High School for an evening of music that the 600 in attendance will long remember. Evelyn Chandler spared no effort in time and resources in planning and putting together a parade in downtown Smithfield that not only honored our veterans, but made all of us feel proud to be Americans. Herb DeGroft performed a masterful job as he served as master of ceremonies.

We hope everyone who attended enjoyed the events, and we are looking forward to planning for the next year.

Smithfield Stop cruel abortions

It's been said that ignorance is bliss, but there comes a time when we need to face the facts and take a stand for what is right.

An abortion procedure known as a ``partial birth abortion'' is used more often than abortion-rights groups care to admit, and it is a particularly gruesome act. In this procedure, the baby is pulled from the mother by the feet until only the head remains inside. Then scissors are inserted into the back of the baby's head, they are pulled open, and a high-powered suction tube is inserted to remove the brain. Only then is the baby completely removed from the mother. This is legal, and it happens repeatedly in the United States.

One hundred thirty-eight members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act (H.R. 1833) to bring a legal end to this cruel and unusual procedure. If you respect human life and care to help restore the dignity of human life, please contact your congressman and request that he support H.R. 1833. You can also call Sen. Charles Robb and Sen. John Warner for support on the Senate Companion Bill, S.939. Act quickly, for the vote is coming up very soon. There's something to be said for those who speak up for others who cannot speak for themselves.
