NANSEMOND RIVER placed four field hockey players on the Bay Rivers All-District first team, as voted by coaches last week.
Kari Harrell joined Kim Griffin, Heather Behrends and Kristi Mizelle for the Warriors, who were regular season and Bay Rivers tournament champions with an overall record of 14-4. Nansemond River also finished second to Western Albemarle in the Group AA state invitational tournament in Warrenton.
``(Having four players on the all-district team) is a manifestation of how the team did,'' said Warriors coach Bucky Payton. ``You don't get four players on the first team unless the team does something. The ultimate measure is how the team does.''
Harrell, a link, earned player of the year honors. This season the senior scored 19 goals, a school record, and ended her career as the district's all-time goal scorer with 72. The previous mark was 56, set by Poquoson's Debra Rice from 1988-91.
``Coming into this year, unless she fell flat, I figured she would get (player of the year),'' Payton said. ``She didn't only score. She did whatever she could to help us out.''
Behrends, a forward, broke Nansemond River's single-season assist record with 11. She also added nine goals.
Mizelle, who finished the season with seven goals and two assists, was named to the first team as a forward, while Griffin was named as a defender.
Rounding out the first team were: Bruton's Cristen Zanca, Jill Bechberger, Cara Hoar and Shannon Farino; York's Andrea Guerra and Arika Roy; and Poquoson's Heather Ivey.
Lakeland, which earned a berth in the district tournament for the first time, placed four players on the second team: defender Amy Aswell, link Charity Gent, and forwards Sheila Byrum and Crystal McCully.
McCully was second in district scoring with 10 goals. Byrum had eight goals for the Cavaliers.
Nansemond River's Katie Sklar and Lakeland's Keri Ardelji earned honorable mention. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
