It's a first for Chesapeake - a chance for citizens, instead of City Council, to choose the people who will control the quality of education city children get.
Eleven candidates will contend for five seats on the School Board during a special election Dec. 19.
The timing of the ballot is unfortunate. A dispute with the U.S. Justice Department over whether board members would be elected at-large, resolved this summer after more than a year, forced the city to set the December date.
Now the biggest challenge for the contenders, including four incumbents, will be competing for voters' attention and persuading them to show up at the polls so near the holidays.
City officials are predicting a low turnout, but hoping for better.
To help get the word out, The Chesapeake Clipper interviewed each of the candidates. Here are their stories:
Donald J. Bailey
Tom Bray
Renee Hannas
Barbara B. Head
Mary Mazur
Harry Murphy
Ted Nance
James M. Reeves
Jeff Rowland
Roderic Taylor
