Plans to study the long-term facilities needs of the county was announced Monday by a non-partisan political organization.
The Dare County chapter of the League of Women Voters disclosed its intentions at Monday's meeting of the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
The news took at least one member of the board of commissioners by surprise.
Commissioner Doug Langford said Monday's presentation was the first he had heard of the study.
``I'm completely shocked,'' he said. ``I think we should provide material to the league, just as we would to any citizen. But this study does not have the support of the board of commissioners. No organization in Dare County has the support of the county to do such a study.''
Cheryl Byrd of the league said the organization hopes to assess the needs of Dare County in terms of present and future facilities, the location of government departments, and where they could be placed to best serve the citizens of Dare County, and outline various options and their costs.
Byrd said the study should be completed by March.
Data for the study will be provided by county departments. Langford, the chairman of the commission's Capital Improvements Committee, said a new government complex is not up for discussion.
``This issue is not on the table,'' said Langford. ``Back in July we said that unless this complex had the support of the majority of the citizens of Dare County, it would not be built. That has not changed.''
Plans for a new county administrative complex were scrapped last summer in the face of growing opposition to the plan. by CNB
