RESCUED FROM A SANDY GRAVE

ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by DREW C. WILSON, The Virginian-Pilot

Almost gone but not forgotten, this shad boat may have been crafted

by famed Roanoke Island boatbuilder George Washington Creef. It was

built around 1900 for sail but was retrofitted for power. Bill Rea,

Elizabeth II site manager, gives it the once-over after it was

rescued from a Nags Head lot.
