IN THE COMMUNITY
Dr. Eugene L. Kanter was presented the Humanitarian Award during a recent meeting of the Fraternal Order of Police Associates, a group of professional and businessmen supportive of local police officers.
The award was presented to Kanter in recognition of his humanitarian and charitable contributions to the community. A citation and plaque accompanied the award. It was the first time the organization has recognized one of its own members.
At the same meeting, the organization recognized investigators Mark J. Geier and Douglas E. Frenier as the Outstanding Norfolk Police Officers for the second quarter of 1995. This is the second time Geier has been given that honor.
MILITARY PEOPLE
Navy Lt. Michael E. Araojo, son of Ernesto E. and Antonia E. Araojo of the 8000 block of Alida Drive, recently reported for duty with Operational Test and Evaluation Force, Norfolk. A 1986 graduate of Lake Taylor High School, Araojo joined the Navy in May 1990. He is a 1990 graduate of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Marine Cpl. Richard R. Ridley, son of Clarence and Mary Matthews of the 1500 block of Arkansas Ave., recently received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. To earn the medal, Ridley achieved and maintained a satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record for a three-year period. Ridley, who is assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 4, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Air Wing, Okinawa. He is a 1992 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School.
Marine Staff Sgt. Edward L. Jones, son of Edward L. and Jean D. Jones of the 7900 block of Elm St., recently reported for duty with Marine Air Control Squadron 4, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Air Wing, Okinawa, Japan.
Marine Staff Sgt. Edward Miller, son of Edward J. and Mary L. Miller of the 2900 block of Chesapeake Blvd., recently reported for duty with 3rd Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan.
CAMPUS NOTES
The Norfolk State University aviation team won the top flight team award at the third annual National Intercollegiate Flying Association Region 10 flying meet held at the Chesapeake Municipal Airport.
Members of the team took home the first-, second- and third-place positions in the power-off landing and short field landing events.
