CHARLES D. MEACHUM

Charles Davis Meachum, 56, passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 1995, in Houston, Texas.

A lifelong resident of the beach borough, he was associated with the First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach, where his father had ministered in the late 1930s. Mr. Meachum was a graduate of both the University of Virginia's School of Commerce and School of Law, and a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and the Z Society. After brief tenures as a naval officer and assistant commonwealth attorney in Virginia Beach, he assumed a lengthy career as an investment banker with The Investment Corporation of Virginia and, more recently, Scott and Stringfellow in Norfolk, funding many local municipal projects prior to his retirement in January 1995. He served as captain of the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and for many years was a respected member of the Board of Directors of the Tidewater Chapter of the American Red Cross.

He is survived by his wife, Tally; his parents, Lonnie and Jessie Meachum of Virginia Beach; five children, Chet, Pete, Hetter, Millie and Anne Carter Meachum, all of Virginia Beach; his sister, Carolyn Hawxhurst of Dunkirk, Md.; and many friends throughout the Tidewater area.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 14, 1995, at 4 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach, 401 35th Street, in the beach borough. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
