The day after police released a picture of a robbery in progress at an automatic teller machine, a man was arrested and charged with the crime.
Police said Wednesday that the suspect, Derrick L. Hansford, 29, was already in the Norfolk City Jail on a separate grand larceny charge. He was taken into custody on that charge Tuesday, and was arrested at noon Wednesday on the ATM robbery charge.
The robbery took place at 7:42 p.m. Sunday near Janaf Shopping Center at the First Union Bank in the 5800 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. The photo, taken by the ATM's camera on Tuesday, showed a woman frozen with fear and a man standing behind her.
In an interview Tuesday, the victim said the man approached from behind as she made a withdrawal. He implied he had a weapon and forced her to withdraw $200, she said.
Hansford, of Norfolk, has been charged with robbery and abduction.
Hill said police received 12 Crime Line tips identifying the suspect between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning after Hansford's picture appeared in the media.
