Speckled trout were abundant in the surf along the Dare Coast Wednesday. Almost every slough from Kitty Hawk to Buxton was productive. Quite a few striped bass were also taken by trout fishermen.
Gray trout were caught along with speckled trout at some locations. The trout were taken on an assortment of artificial lures from green twisters to Mirrolures in a variety of colors.
In the northern beach area, fishing was particularly good in holes south of Nags Head Pier, behind the Nags Head Inn, both north and south of Jennette's Pier and south of Ramp 4 on the north side of Oregon Inlet.
Some nice-sized puppy drum were landed by fishermen in Avon.
Good numbers of striped bass were taken from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet Tuesday night. Fair numbers of stripers were landed around the inlet by surfacasters and by boaters.
Speckled trout fishing was excellent along the beach north of Cape Point behind the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the motels.
Plenty of 12- to 14-inch trout were landed in the Frisco area from sloughs on both sides of Frisco Pier. Action was good in the area Tuesday afternoon and most of Wednesday.
Piers in the Nags Head area reported good fishing, but very few anglers were on hand to take advantage of it. Lots of stripers were taken from Nags Head Pier, including fish weighing 15 and 24 pounds caught by Brad Bradley of Nags Head. His fish hit Fin-S lures.
Jennette's Pier reported some speckled trout landed during the morning.
Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught plenty of 1- to 4-pound speckled trout and stripers weighing 10 to 12 pounds.
Yellowfin tuna fishing was good around ``the point,'' southeast of Oregon Inlet. Some wahoo also were taken. A sailfish estimated at 40 pounds was released by the Outer Limits.
Commercial catches of king mackerel were fairly good around the wrecks off Hatteras.
Speckled trout fishing should remain a good bet along the Outer Banks until water temperatures drop well below 50 degrees.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier was 53.5 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
