RETIREES GOT A RAW DEAL

Regarding the latest action taken by the state in payments to federal retirees for unlawful taxation:

I think most retirees feel deceived by our government. We were led to believe that the state did not have funds available to make this kind of payment, so we were asked to accept 76 percent of what we were owed over a five-year period. Most retirees accepted, believing they would receive five equal payments, which is not the procedure.

There is no reason why we should not have been paid one-fifth of the money owed. It certainly was not because the money was not available, because it did not seem to be a problem coming up with the $78 million to pay the 14,000 retirees who did not accept the original offer.
