HEILIG'S LEAVING LAW FIRM RAISES ASSEMBLY QUESTION

George H. Heilig Jr., recently re-elected to his seat in the House of Delegates, has resigned suddenly from his law firm.

His departure has raised questions in the city's legislative delegation and in Richmond about whether he will be available to be sworn in in January.

``I think the question is out there,'' said Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim, Heilig's former law partner. ``I don't know what George's decision will be. You'll have to ask him.''

Heilig, 52, was lead partner in the firm of Heilig McKenry Fraim & Lollar on Newtown Road in Norfolk.

A receptionist at the firm said Thursday that Heilig left the firm about two weeks ago. Fraim confirmed that, but said Heilig would be welcome to return.

Del. Thomas W. Moss, D-88th District, the Speaker of the House, said, ``We anticipate George Heilig being sworn in on Jan. 10. I haven't heard anything to the contrary. I think when he's had a little time to himself, he'll call me up and say, `Let's go to Richmond.' ''

Heilig could not be reached for comment.

He has suffered from deteriorating vision in the last few years. It was not clear whether that was connected to his decision to leave the firm.

Heilig has been in the legislature for 24 years, rising to influential positions on the committees for banking and appropriations. Twice in recent years he has defeated determined campaigns by George Schaefer, chairman of the Norfolk Republican Party, in Norfolk's 86th House district. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo

There is no indication thus far that George Heilig will not take his

House seat Jan. 10.
