Christy Bryant was unguardable Friday night.
If a Cox player covered her loosely, Bryant stepped back and pumped in a 3-pointer. If the guard came closer, Bryant slipped around her and drove to the basket for a layup.
By the end of the game, she had amassed 28 points, including six treys, in Bayside's 73-62 victory over Cox.
Bryant grabbed six rebounds and went 4 of 5 from the free-throw line as Bayside coach Conrad Parker credited solid free-throw shooting late with the win.
``That's what you've got to do,'' Parker said. ``We don't have a lot of size, so we've got to hit the free throws and get the rebounds. We did a good job on the boards.''
For Bayside, Tracy Berger grabbed 11 rebounds and Aretha Williams and Carolyn Zanelli each had 10, Zanelli chipping in 16 points too.
Cox started strongly, building a seven-point lead in the first quarter on the shooting of Tonya Lattkas. But the Falcons netted only four points in the second quarter as Bayside grabbed a 28-24 halftime lead.
``The defense in the second quarter, I thought that was the difference in the ballgame,'' Parker said.
Bryant hit three treys in the third quarter as Bayside (3-0) opened up a nine-point margin. The Marlins never trailed in the second half.
Lattkas paced Cox (0-3) with 18 points. Shannon Drury scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and Katie Schlegal added 12. ILLUSTRATION: Photo by VICKI CRONIS, The Virginian-Pilot
