A Richmond school bus carrying 12 elementary school students was broadsided by a car and overturned Tuesday afternoon after the bus ran a stop sign, police said.
Eighteen people were taken to the hospital, but only one was hospitalized.
The one person hospitalized at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals was in stable condition. A hospital spokeswoman declined to identify the person other than as an adult who was not a driver.
Richmond police have charged the bus driver, 33-year-old Alvin Baugh, with disregarding a stop sign. He was carrying students from East End Elementary School.
Baugh, a 13-year-veteran, was driving east on O Street when he ran the 31st Street stop sign, police said. Thomas Mason, 62, was driving a 1989 Lincoln Town Car south on 31st Street when he slammed into the bus. Mason, his daughter, two grandchildren and another adult were taken to MCV, as were the bus driver and the 12 students.
